"Sometimes
they come back"
So Here
we go Part one of my epic look at “Sometimes They Come Back"
Trilogy.....to tell the truth I've not seen Pt1 but I have some very vague
memories of watching Pt2 and Pt3......so lets see how this series is going to
pan out with the first film!!!!!
Jimmy is a troubled Teacher with
a haunted past...and is going back to his childhood county to face his fears
and memories following a breakdown....a very wise move....not any old town but
a town that has a secret..... a dark secret in which Jimmy is the key.
So the
students know something of the Jimmy's previous breakdown which caused a
disturbance at his last school...god word spreads fast.....so cut to night and
I liked how the flash backs are of a happier time in Jimmy's life....but
intertwined with these memories...... darker memories start to push through.
Then I noticed some one who looks like Kiefer Sutherland character David from
"The Lost Boys"???? why do these gang of Greasers haunts Jimmy's
dreams???? There was one dream sequence which I did find a bit cheesy but it's
something that is a reoccurring theme in most Stephen King works......but
Jimmy's older Brother using him as a book slave I found quite funny....the
scene moves to a old Train tunnel...why is this tunnel symbolic????. The
Greaser Gang turn up and decided to pick on children resulting in Jimmy's
brother being killed.......I was so glad when the train kills them.....thus
starts the cycle
So after
a Jock kicks off for failing and being removed from the Football Team.....we
are treated to a car chase......well it's more Car vs Bike...so Billy is
cycling hard and then this 1950's car did something which made me go....”did my
ears deceive me”??......quickly rewind and listen again........confused
face......I'm sure that car just growled????? and not just any old growl a
growl with attitude!!!! so I shrug my shoulders and Billy dies. Now the Greaser
are being right bastards........wind him up by making him paranoid....I'm
actually enjoying this film and the fact that Jimmy is being haunted and
stalked by the phantoms of the past.....so back to the film....now Jimmy is
watching King Kong and I'm seriously thinking he is developing some serious
mental health issues here especially seeing his dead brother on the TV?? but
this is the realms of Stephen King and stuff like this happens all the
time......Jimmy decides to do the most logical thing after having a psychotic
episode and take a walk...guess where...yep you guessed it the train tunnel???
Jimmy heads back into town and bumps into a pupil who informs him that no train
has run through the town in years.....Also the family dynamics are breaking
up...he's getting paranoid???...like with all Stephen King's works I know Jimmy
is going to get the blame for this young students death (the girl) it's another
running theme of Kings works look at “The Dark Half” an alter ego is killing
people and the protagonist gets the blame. Now it's time for an school
emergency meeting and Jimmy yet again puts his foot in it with the head
teacher..that headmaster has it in for him big style also he opens his big
mouth to....*drum roll* the psychotherapist...who in turn reports him to the
police.....his day is getting shitter and shitter and to top it of the blonde
bastard Greaser is now in the classroom. The Jock is now turning into a nice
dude and starting to warm to him.......but I know he's going to die...and it's
going to be a slow painful death..these guys are really twisted and that
Growling car....is it really needed?????.....and what makes it worse he's
getting his arse kicked by the police. And they are not believing him....not
looking good.
Now the plot thickens as Jimmy finds out there is no Milford
high.....it's all about revenge...payback...now the desperation kicks
in...Jimmy now has to protect his family as well as his own sanity. Jimmy
decides to track down the last survivor of the Greaser gang Mueller. Mueller
thinks he's mad and runs off. Alone Jimmy decides to tackle the situation by
himself, whilst rummaging through his families old house Mueller appears and
tells him that he always knew they will one day come back.......history repeats
itself.
The
Greaser gang tricks Jimmy's wife and son to leave the safety of the
church....and puts them into the Growling Car........Jimmy's older Brother
comes back via Mueller's death and we are now full cycle..the Greasers are back
in hell were they belong.......so Jimmy's Brother asks Jimmy to come back with
him as he doesn't want to be left alone......I had images of the ending to “The
Mist” but it went down another route which I thought was a little
cheesy.....but I didn't mind it too much.
Verdict:
“Sometimes they Come Back” is a enjoyable film not once did I get bored and the
story moves at a good pace. The music is dark and sits well with the film
visuals which is important especially in a horror film. It is certainly one of
the better Stephen King adaptations and I'd watch again. The only down side is
for me the Growling Car and I also felt something was missing from the story
but for the life of me I can't put my finger on it......All in all a good and
enjoyable film ok it lacks the gore...but it makes up for that with tension and
being hunted and taunted by ghosts from the past.......
…..............Now
onto “Sometimes They Come Back......Again I hope it's as good as the first one
