I
remember seeing the trailer for Devil whilst waiting to watch Inception and
thinking “hum this looks interesting” until 7 words came up “From the Mind of M
Night Shyamalan” I emitted a load groan and my view of the film plummeted
down....how can one name have that effect on a film. So I decided to watch the
film and give it the benefit of the doubt.........wish I hadn't!!!
The film
starts of with a quote from the bible “very Omen...looks promising” then the
cheesy voice over butts in and the atmosphere of the opening scene is
shattered. Que music......the first thing that popped to mind was Jaws a very
piss poor Jaws rip off, with the strings doing a variation of the theme with
the horns coming in for dramatic effect...*rolled eyes*. Then what follows this
is a man falling form the building and smashing onto the roof of a van whilst a
worker is buffing the floor and doesn't see or hear anything, in fact no-one
notices that someone has died???? It reminded me from a scene from “The
Happening”. Enter the police and I assumed that the van was outside the
building...NO!!!! the van has somehow travelled down the street bumped of a
barrier and down a side street and parking....and no-one noticed this strange
occurrence....and the van has moved not just a few feet but what seems like
miles away from the crime scene....again my eye's rolled and the word Bullshit
burst forth from my mouth. So here comes the main characters of the
film.....all boring, poor acting and all unlike able except for the Detective
Bowden...who seemed to be showing some signs of concern. Then the lift gets
stuck, this is where we get cliché moment 1 it's lift 6 (and if you turn it
round it's 9 and in some cultures 9 is the devils number) as if we didn't see
that coming. I was expecting the lift to be stuck on floor 66, but it wasn't.
This is where it get strange a maintenance man comes onto the scene and has his
own brush with death on 3 occasions once on the roof whilst chasing his cap, in
an elevator shaft.....when in cliché perdicability a lift nearly squashes him,
and finally in the elevator shaft above the elevator and thus finally dies. Now
the security guard stuck in the elevator is meant to be claustrophobic, due to
what happened to him when he's a child. He's the most calm claustrophobic I've
ever seen esp when people start dying!!! What I did find was so cheesy was what
came forth from the Mexican Security guards mouth when the Detective asked him
for his opinion....brace yourselves “One of those people is the Devil”...no
shit Sherlock!!!! as if we didn't already know that!!! man M Night Shyamalan
must think we are so thick!!!
38.18mins
in and I'm getting bored!!! Elevator light flickers off and another
death....more running around by the Detective....yawn...... look at my watch
52:24
mins in Sarah goes “I don't even know your name”, I'm like what ever...I've
been stuck in a elevator before and after 10mins you introduce yourself to the
other people and try to lighten up the mood...but no not in the world of M
Night Shyamalan people don't do that. Cut to scene of Firemen casually working,
showing no real signs of urgency seeing that there is now 2 dead bodies in the
elevator...but the music is so dramatic and OTT it saying look at this dramatic
and the urgency of the firemen to save the trapped people....really??? they
seem very calm to me....bad insertion of music. Second security man dies (one
who is outside of the elevator). Now he dies in the most predictable way EVER
here is the formula:
Man +
Long stick + Electricity + Water = Death
I kid you
not how unrealistic is that and how many times have we seen this done in films,
let be realistic if you saw and electrical wire spitting sparks and there is
water on the floor you would not reach for a long stick and stand in the
water.....for God sake!!!!!
60:00mins
in bored....very bored taken to throw popcorn at friends.......unoriginal
deaths.....only 2 people left to go.......
64:30mins
waiting for the cheesy lift drop to happen, it's got too happen at some
point!!!! Devil shows itself including the all important Supernatural Black
eyes...where is Sam and Dean with there fake F.B.I badges....
The sole
survivor admits that he was involved in a hit and run 6 months
previously......this is meant to be the twist...really as if we didn't see that
coming from a mile off....esp when the detective had spoken to them 20mins
previously that he lost his wife and child to a hit and run incident and you
can easily put 2 and 2 together seeing that everyone in the elevator all has a
criminal record!!!
70:04min
Cheesy elevator drop occurs, I knew it was going too happen.....predictable.
Overall
view of the film....., nothing original, cliché and very predictable and
boring. M Night Shyamalan even tried to shock with the twist at the end....Epic
Fail cos I saw it from a mile off. If you ever get stuck in an elevator just
pray it's not from the mind of M Night Shyamalan.
